flung 25 m into the bush and who died of his wounds

the same day.  The driver of the vehicle was unharmed.

 

BOLTON, Derek J.                                    Killed on active service.  Contracted cerebral malaria

Vedette Snr W/Officer                        while on a training camp in the Shamva area 02.06.79.

De Courpalay was from Macheke and went to school

at Marandellas High School. His father was i.c, BSAP

Macheke. His death was the result of 3 sticks being

given incorrect map references and the resulting blue on

blue was a disaster with a number shot dead and many

wounded.

FARAI, Cpl.                                        Killed in January, 1980, during an attack on the DC’s

NOT ON ROLL                         camp at Mudzi - was returning fire from the side of his

married quarters when a RPG rocket hit and exploded

inside his home.  Wife and children were safe inside the

bunker in the front of the house.  Several witnesses

report that FARAI invited fire to his house by loading

only tracer rounds in his magazines.  He was warned

several times during the attack not to do so. On

inspection it was found that the remaining mags

contained only tracer rounds.

GRANLUND, Allen Cpl                        Mentioned in Roll of Honour as being killed 14 October,

2 Indep Coy RR                                    1978.   Source mentions this man was a classmate and

a fellow medic. The Sunday the Viscount was shot down

(i.e. the day that the public heard the announcement on

the news at 7.45 p.m.) was two weeks before. The obit

in the Sunday paper was two weeks later and source

attended the funeral that week, when he was on R & R.

Killed in September, 1978, and not October, 1978.

 

HAHN, Manfred                                    P/R (Bright Lights) - killed in error by another P/R

NOT ON ROLL                                    while guarding farmhouse. HAHN was a German

National who knew Trevor STEER through the Salisbury Gliding Club. HAHN was guarding a farm

house with another P/R because the farmer was away.

They thought they were under attack.  HAHN went

outside to recce while the other P/R took the farmer’s

wife and children to a bedroom for safety.  The other

P/R saw an armed figure outside the house, opened fire

and killed HAHN.             

 

HALLETT, Eric                                    KOAS. P/R (Bright Lights) - killed when passenger in vehicle accident.  The vehicle in which he was a

passenger hit the parapet of a bridge when a newspaper

on the seat next to the driver blew into the driver’s face.

RPG7 - quite a feat knowing the speeds Heckler used

to travel when he drove a vehicle.

JARVIE, Henry.     Flt Sgt                        Killed in action 12th January, 1978, together with

Ian Fleming, a helicopter technician, while flying an

Alouette III in action.

(2) JARVIE was a Flight Sergeant, not Flt Lt, and was

killed in same contact as FLEMING but at different

times.  FLEMING was the engineer in a K car and

was shot when the contact was initiated and JARVIE

was the engineer in a G car and was shot during the

follow up.

MAGIRAZI, Waison                                    Died of his wounds 23 Oct 1978 incurred during a

F/R BSAP                                           landmine clearing incident 15-20 km from Headlands

Police Station. F/R BITIRINYI killed instantly and

driver of vehicle escaped unharmed.

 

MATTHEWS, Grant Stuart                        Rfn. 4 Brigade. Died of wounds received in action on

MICHELL, Kenneth Michael            (Cpl)            Rhodesian Intelligence Corps. Wounded in action while

clearing contour ridges, shot at close quarters by an

insurgent who stood up under cover of a ridge.

25th June, 1978. (Medal Society had date as 26.08.78)

MICHELL was actually wounded in action in the same

year - this could be the confusion and duplication from

the Medal Society). He was killed in landmine

incident, not on the contour ridges.

MIRAMS, David                                    Killed by landmine only fifty yards from his front gate,

District Commissioner                        on 2.01.79.at his DC’s residence in Mrewa. He had just been promoted to Regional Commissioner and was due to commence duties the week after he was killed. Three   thousand locals attended his funeral.             

 

MORGAN, Christopher John                        KIA April 1977. Accidentally killed by a shotgun blast

PHILIPS, Dennis                                    Was formerly a Patrol Officer in the BSAP. Left the

Junior Commandant, Guard Force            Police to join Rhodesia Railways as a Safety Officer in

N.B. Roll of Honour states              Matabeleland.  He was conscripted into the Guard Force

date of death as 15/4/79.                  (Intake GFR/3) and subsequently underwent the first

Guard Force Officer Cadet training course. He served in

various operational areas :- Chipings, Chiredzi, Honde

Valley, Mt Darwin and Gwelo.  In 1979, while riding in

an unprotected Landrover near Gwelo he was ambushed

by a group of CTs and sustained fatal injuries, from

which he died on 19th April, 1979. 

 

POSTHUMUS, G            (N.S.)                        KOAS. Keep Commander Guard Force. Killed by his own men whilst in a PV. Seemingly he confiscated cards from the Guards as they were gambling - they promptly shot him.  Sept. 1978.

 

POVEY, Roger                                    He was injured critically in a landmine explosion while

driving a Landrover and was casevaced in a Trojan.

When the pilot arrived at the landing strip it was dark

and the unit had no flares to light up the runway, so they

parked two Landrovers at he beginning with their

headlights pointed down the runway. Unfortunately one

of the Trojan’s wheels clipped one of the Landrovers

and flipped the plane into the ground killing Povey, the

pilot and the medic (Air Lt. Murdoch and Cpl Parker).

P/O BSAP                                           his way to investigate a mortar attack on a farmhouse

at 2100 hours.  He was firing over the top of the

Landrover when he was hit by three rounds of RPD fire.
